Astro Bot Review Sony’s Still Got It
Astro is the main character of the Astro Bot series and serves as the captain of his ship’s bot crew. A brave and adventurous robot, Astro will stop at nothing to rescue his crew and bring them safely back. Team up with iconic PlayStation heroes to save the galaxy and experience the game’s immersive world through the DualSense wireless controller. A few months ago, Sony issued a free DLC (downloadable content) for “Astro’s Playroom” that connects the previous game with the new one. Since all PS5 consoles come with “Astro’s Playroom” for free, it’s more than likely that “Astro Bot” will become a big hit for Sony.
Astro Bot is PlayStation’s exclusive 3D adventure platformer that features Astro’s journey to rescue his fellow crewmates and fix up the mothership. Read our review to see what it did well, what it didn’t do well, and if it’s worth buying. Customers praise this platformer game for being a champion of arcade-meets-open world gameplay, with beautiful visuals and an amazing soundtrack.
That would be a charming Easter egg hunt, but Team Asobi isn’t just investing in empty references. It uses the opportunity to show its love for PlayStation history. As players explore each level, there are several collectibles for them to find. These come in the form of finding Astro’s fellow Bots (who are sometimes dressed up as famous and forgotten PlayStation characters) and puzzle pieces in each stage. The best that could be said about these collectibles is they never feel like a chore to track down and get.
Astro Bot’s utterly overflowing creativity and ingenuity make it one of the first platformers that feels like it can stand outside the long shadow cast by Mario. It’s a grand celebration of PlayStation’s legacy and a sign of what its future can become. What’s amazing is despite how wide-reaching the references are in Astro Bot, this isn’t just a celebration of PlayStation’s first-party stuff but so much of what’s defined gaming for decades. Monster Hunter, Space Channel 5, Wipeout, Legend of Dragoon, Tony Hawk, the list goes on and on. Obviously, there’s no way you can feature everything from across four decades of gaming, but I consistently found myself amazed by the rich variety of references and games featured.
The game is very streamline I would have thought no way I am missing this stuff lol. In addition to new levels, Sony as part of its June State of Play announced a new limited-edition Astro Bot DualSense controller, one with a slightly different expression from a previous Astro Bot controller. That controller is still not available for preorder, though Sony said it will launch later this year and that it would have more information to share soon. It wouldn’t be an Astro Bot update without new Special Bot cameo appearances, and now we know a few that players can discover.

The game introduces a group of four VR Bots, known as the VR 4, which serve various roles in the mini games as the playable characters for television players. In Ghost House, VR Bots appear as residents of a large house which is haunted by Bot ghosts. In Mini Bots, VR Bots appear in the display room and one is used in the Grabber as the crane. In Robots Rescue, playing as Astro Bot, who makes his debut in this game, 20 VR Bots appear as his missing comrades that must be found. In Toy Wars, a general appears in the opening cutscene, alongside VR Bots that work in the background.

Jump across crumbling icebergs, dodge spinning blades, and create your own frosty platforms on the way to rescue your freezing friends. In Building Speed, with the help of Barkster, the bulldog booster, you will blast your way through a sky-high city. Dodge cranes, smash through crates, and even speed through a flying car wash on the way to rescue your stranded crew.
Getting back to normal size can break certain barriers like cages fellow bots are trapped in. There are two fist-like weapons in the game which occupy an even amount of power. First, there are the Frog Gloves which allow the player to punch forward with both PS5 triggers on the controller.
Foamstars has 2 done to death modes yet I can think of a surfboard mode, a foam clean up mode, chemicals to mess with the foam, traps and more. They barely come up with anything that useful to use the foam for. They just don’t have that mindset, too much money focus then to be creative with the worlds/core mechanics.
200 Bots are required to clear the main story, as the final locked level, Falcon Mcfly, requires 200 Bots to access. [newline]Bots (formerly AR Bots and VR Bots) are a major species within the Astro Bot series. Appearing in every installment to date, they serve as the crew of Astro Bot, and their rescue appears as an objective throughout the games. A sequel, Astro’s Playroom, was released for the PlayStation 5 as a launch title that is pre-installed on every console and serves as a tech demo for the new DualSense controller.
And while you don’t need a long history with Sony systems to enjoy it, it is especially a delight for those with a piece of PlayStation in their heart as a treasure trove full of playable nostalgia awaits. Over 150 of them in fact, as characters from PlayStation’s vast library of games have made their way into Astro’s world in the form of other bots. There are the ones you’d expect like Lombaxes, tomb raiders, and a certain rapping dog but, delightfully, some are plucked from the more obscure end of the scale. It’s light touches of irony and slapstick humour like this that keep Astro’s playful tone going throughout. It really is just a delight from start to finish in this regard. Octo-Balloon is another power-up that is flight-based although the functionality is quite different.
The game encourages exploration, rewarding players for finding hidden collectibles and secret areas. Astro Bot’s abilities, such as high jumps, hovering, and special gadgets, allow for creative movement and problem-solving. Each level presents new challenges, from navigating tricky terrain to overcoming environmental hazards.
You unlock Photo Mode at the same time you unlock Safari Park at the Crash Site, by picking up the camera as soon as you enter the building. This will take a total of 64 Puzzle Pieces, or four groups of 16. Music is an important part of pretty much every video game, but these titles take their soundtracks to a whole new level. https://tr88.golf/ about the PlayStation Bots is that they’re not used as often as one would expect. It could have been easy for Team Asobi to overdo the callbacks and make this game nothing more than a self-indulgent reference fest. Instead, they treated these cameos and references like a spice that was only occasionally sprinkeld throughout the game.
Astro bot Rescue Mission (VR ONE) is still the MOST transformative game I’ve played in my adult life. If you’ve become jaded or gaming bores you, it’ll legit make you feel like a kid playing games for the first time again. That feeling that desentized adults have to take drugs to feel, I kid you not. People can want presentation, charm, graphics, whatever level design/easy mechanics, no puzzles (unless platforming related I assume), etc. Dualsense use are be fine, level design/movesets look done before.
